usually great, but a small hiccup this time

my go-to for PCBs, always reliable. this time i needed some connectors and while the quality of the '2.54mm Pitch 40 Pin Single Row Male Breakaway Header' was good like always, the shipping felt a bit slow. usually, it's super fast, but this order took an extra couple of days to arrive. still, their prices are hard to beat, especially with the new customer codes if you haven't used one before.

Good quality, delivery was slow this time

My custom PCBs from Smart Prototyping arrived, and the quality is consistently good like my previous orders, but shipping took an extra few days this time.

Great Quality Multilayer PCB!

Last week, I ordered some Multilayer PCBs and chose Smart Prototyping for the first time. The ordering process was straightforward, especially since they accepted my KiCad gerber files without a hitch. My boards arrived on time, and the quality is on par with what I've received from other places like JLCPCB, maybe even a bit better on the silkscreen. Used a new customer code and saved about 15% on the board cost.

still a solid choice for PCBs

i've used smart prototyping a few times now, usually for my 4-layer pcbs, and they're consistently good. shipping to the usa was about $23.40 this time which is pretty standard. i usually check jlcpcb too but smart prototyping's quality keeps me coming back.

Quick shipping on modules

Ordered a few Arduino Modules and a Power Supply Module. They shipped faster than expected. Everything worked straight out of the box. Simple, no fuss purchase.

Good value for ESP32 boards

I was looking for some ESP32 Boards and Smart Prototyping had a decent price, especially after a small discount code popped up at checkout for first-time buyers. The total cost was lower than other places I checked. Shipping wasn't instant, but considering the overall saving, it felt like a fair trade-off. Definitely got good value for what I paid.

Consistent PCB quality

Another successful order for 4-Layer PCBs. I've used Smart Prototyping several times now, and the quality is always reliable. This batch was just as good as the last, trace widths and vias were perfect. Turnaround times have been pretty consistent too, which helps with project planning. It's why I keep coming back for my prototyping needs.

Smooth PCB Design Service Experience

I used their PCB Design Service for a custom project and was quite impressed. The communication during the design phase was clear; they asked good questions to nail down specifications. Once the design was approved, the manufacturing for the Multilayer PCB started promptly. Delivery took about 12 days to the US, which was within their estimated timeframe. The boards arrived well-packaged, and the quality of the silkscreen and soldermask was excellent. One minor point, I had a question about component footprints, and support took a day to get back to me, but the answer was thorough. Overall, a solid service and product.

My PCB assembly order from Smart Prototyping is stuck in 'processing' for over a week now. Anyone else seeing delays?

C ComponentGuru 5 hours ago ✓ Best Answer
For PCBA, they sometimes wait for all components to arrive before starting. Could be a component delay, not necessarily their manufacturing speed.
5
N NewbieNerd 5 hours ago
Following this, I'm about to place a PCBA order too.
4
C CircuitDude 4 hours ago
That makes sense. They mentioned sourcing some parts for me.
4
M MakerMike 3 hours ago
Yeah, I've had that with other services too. Component sourcing can add weeks.
7
P ProtoGuy 7 hours ago
Yeah, I had a similar issue last month. My 4-layer PCB order took forever to even get past 'design review'. Lead times seem to be a bit hit or miss with them lately.

T TechieTom 6 hours ago
Did you try contacting support? Sometimes they just need a nudge.

E ElecEngineer 5 hours ago
Mine finally shipped after 5 days, but the tracking never updated. Just showed up one day.

F FlexiFab 4 hours ago
Mine was pretty quick actually. Got my flexible PCBs in about 10 days, start to finish. Maybe it depends on the complexity or component sourcing?
11
C CircuitDude 3 hours ago
Could be. My order had some unusual components they had to source.

Need some basic components for an Arduino project. Where to start?

P ProjectStarter 3 weeks ago ✓ Best Answer
Grab an Arduino Module, some basic Sensors, and a Breadboard. Maybe a pack of Prototyping Wires.

D DIYDude 3 weeks ago
Yeah, that's the core kit.

Don't forget some LEDs and resistors from their Electronic Components section!

S ShippingSavvy 3 weeks ago
They often have free shipping on modules. Check if your order qualifies.

A ArduinoFanatic 3 weeks ago
Oh, that's a nice perk. Will look into it.

If you're doing anything with movement, a Motor Driver and a small motor. Or a Relay if you're switching anything high power.
9
R RoboHobbyist 3 weeks ago
Good call on the motor driver, almost always need one.

S SmartHomeGuy 3 weeks ago
Relays are super useful for home automation stuff.

Which PCB type for a beginner project? Just need something basic.

C CircuitWizard 1 month ago ✓ Best Answer
Go with the 2-Layer PCB. It's the cheapest and easiest to design for. Good for learning.
20
E ElecBeginner 1 month ago
Second this. Don't overcomplicate your first board.
4
P ProtoPal 1 month ago
Yeah, 2-layer is standard for simple stuff.
6
A AdvancedHobbyist 1 month ago
Honestly, even 4-layer isn't that much more if you think you might need more routing space later. Depends on your project complexity.
9
P ProtoPal 1 month ago
Good point if you plan to expand, but for a true beginner, 2L is less daunting.
5
C CircuitWizard 1 month ago
But for a *beginner*? Stick to 2L.
7
C CouponHunter 1 month ago
Check their PCB prototyping discount if it's your first order, might save a few bucks.

What's good for a beginner Arduino project kit from Smart Prototyping?

K KaranB 3 weeks ago ✓ Best Answer
Just grab an Arduino Uno module and some basic sensors. The starter kits are often overpriced.
9
R RahulT 3 weeks ago
Don't forget a breadboard!
2
A AishaS 3 weeks ago
Yeah, a basic sensor pack and some prototyping wires are essential.
2
P PriyaM 3 weeks ago
They have DIY Kits. One of those might be a good starting point to get everything you need in one go.

A AnkitJ 3 weeks ago
I found the 'Smart Home Starter Kit' pretty decent for learning.

If you're a student, ask about their student discount for university projects. Could save you some cash on an Arduino board or sensors.
11
S SnehaV 3 weeks ago
Yeah, it helps a lot for bigger components.

M MeenaL 3 weeks ago
That's a smart move, didn't know about that.

Anyone know if Smart Prototyping does student discounts? Got a university project coming up and every bit helps.

D David 1 month ago
I'm pretty sure they do! I remember seeing something about it for engineering projects. Check their site or hit up their support, they're usually pretty responsive.
5
T Todd Bennett 1 month ago
Yeah, they offer a student discount. Used it last year for my capstone project, saved me a decent chunk. You'll likely need to verify your student status.

How do these guys stack up against JLCPCB or PCBWay? Thinking of switching for my next batch of boards.

J June Y. 2 months ago
For simple 2-layer stuff, all three are pretty comparable in price and quality. Smart Prototyping felt a bit more responsive to my questions though.
3
C Cody 2 months ago
I've used both SP and JLCPCB. SP felt a little more 'premium' for more complex multilayer boards, but JLCPCB is hard to beat on super low cost runs. It kinda depends on what you're making.

Are their Arduino modules and sensors genuine, or like, super cheap knockoffs? Don't want to deal with faulty parts.

R Rosa Foster 2 months ago
Most of the modules I've ordered from them have been good quality, never had an issue. They seem to source decent components.

R Renee T. 2 months ago
I've bought several ESP32 boards and various sensors, all worked as expected. Not sure if they're 'official' in every case, but they function perfectly well for prototyping.
